With the odds stacked against her, the Congress-led opposition's presidential candidate Meira Kumar on Sunday urged the members of the electoral college to heed their "voice of conscience" and vote for an ideology that binds India. Sources in the MIM told The Sunday Guardian that the party might abstain from the election to prove that it is equidistant from both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress.

In the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, the BJP has 122 members, Sena-63, Congress-42, NCP-41, Peasants and Workers Party of India (PWP-I)- three, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA)- three, MIM - two, MNS, Samajwadi Party, BBM, CPI-M and RSP - one each and Independents - seven.

The JDU has extended support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Ram Nath Kovind, over Opposition candidate Meira Kumar, despite being a part of the same political faction. "Our party is supporting Meira Kumar and there will be no cross-voting", Khaira siad.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had invited all Congress MLAs for a breakfast meet to ensure that everyone remains on the same page regarding presidential election.

"Some disgruntled members from NDA may vote for Meira Kumar".
