Nintendo of Japan ceases production of standard New Nintendo 3DS models

While western plans are unclear, the Nintendo US Store has no standard New 3DS systems listed, and the UK Store only shows remaining stock of limited edition bundles.

A notification on the Japanese page for the smaller system notes that it's out of production. The XL version of the console is here to stay.

There are two versions of New Nintendo 3DS now available: the New Nintendo 3DS and the New Nintendo 3DS XL.

New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL) models are still in production, however, and the New Nintendo 2DS XL has just launched today in the region.

However, the reign of the portable console is far from over. We are obviously referring to the New 2DS XL, a system that lacks stereoscopic 3D but includes all the virtues of previous systems.

We'll have to wait and see if this carries over to other territories around the globe.

Together, the two New 3DS consoles have shipped a combined total of 12.31m units worldwide as of December 31st 2016.

For now, it looks like the company is slowly going to focus heavily on the Switch.
