New Zealand were more competitive in a 2-1 loss in Nashville a year ago, a game in which the Mexicans were knocked off their stride by some effective pressing defence.

Hosts Russia started their campaign with a 2-0 win over New Zealand and they will hope to build on that as Portugal look to get their first win of the tournament. They need everyone to pull their own weight and to play as one collective against a strong Portugal side containing Ronaldo.

"Our talent can surprise them - and that can be the factor which can win us the match".

The national team of Mexico on the "KK" arrived in the main team, while showing very good results recently.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains "extremely concentrated" on helping Portugal deliver the required result when they tackle Confederations Cup hosts Russian Federation in Moscow, according to coach Fernando Santos.

Chris Wood opened the scoring late in the first half against the run of play when he slotted into the net after a defensive mix-up.

Cristiano Ronaldo's eighth-minute header was the only goal of the game.

"Everyone now, after that game, is incredibly determined to make sure we approach this game with the right mind-set", he said.

All Whites coach Anthony Hudson knows it is all or nothing for his team in their second game at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russian Federation.

New Zealand were then presented with another chance to take the lead in the 27th minute through Ben Woods, however Mexico's Alfredo Talavera produced a fine save to deny the striker. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal to help Portugal win, 1-0.

Russia's best chance in the opening half came in the 41st minute, when forward Fyodor Smolov was found in the box with a cross from the right, but his first touch was poor and redirected the opportunity far wide of the right post.

Portugal knew getting an early lead was vital if they had to clinch three points and as has become the norm, their talisman Ronaldo rose to the occasion to give them an excellent start. "We managed to change a few things in the second half, and were able to attack".

"We have a clear understanding of what needs to be done".

Mexico face New Zealand on Wednesday in Sochi in their second Confederations Cup match.

After the game, Portugal's 32-year-old captain Ronaldo was awarded the trophy of the match's best player.
