It is no consolation to him, but Griffin is now part of a trio of general managers whose contracts were not renewed by Gilbert. "We got us 1 (trophy)".

There is urgency to get some clarity on Griffin's situation as the Cavaliers could be a player in the sweepstakes for George, who told the Indiana Pacers on Sunday that he has no intention to re-sign with them after next season.

Speculation that Griffin would leave Cleveland began in earnest in April.

Griffin's impact on the Cavaliers can't be understated.

Dan Gilbert is reportedly targeting Chauncey Billups to take over the role as Cavs GM. Griffin, one of the main reasons the Cavaliers went to three straight NBA Finals is out of a job as of Monday.

Meanwhile, James LeBron, whose opinion is assumed to matter a lot to the Cleveland Cavaliers, was not consulted regarding the end of the deal between Griffin and Gilbert. Gilbert is also "very engaged" in the Cavs' business right now as they prepare for the draft and field potential trade opportunities, according to the source.

While James is genuinely grateful for Griffin's service, it also seems that he used his tweet to express his dissatisfaction and disappointment with the team. The Cavaliers superstar made it clear that he wants Griffin to stay in Cleveland, but Dan Gilbert had a different plan. Those included replacing former head coach David Blatt with Lue and then trading for J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert and Timofey Mozgov during the 2014-15 season, as well as acquiring three-point specialist Kyle Korver this season.

Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Gilbert is targeting ex-Pistons All-Star Chauncey Billups to become the team's new president of basketball operations. West and LeBron have built connections in the past years given their shared experiences, and that relationship could be instrumental for James to join West.

While many think James ultimately calls the shots in Cleveland, or at least exerts unparalleled sway as a player, Griffin was credited with several moves to help the team. With the exit of David Griffin, the hierarchy of the Eastern Conference could change dramatically by this time next year.

More candidates will appear over the coming days, but for the time being, this is a pivotal period for the Cavs as they look to ensure their future as a contender in the National Basketball Association.
